"Because making something disappear isn't enough... you have to bring it back."
The locally-produced short film performs its prestige in the same place it was created: The Cohoes Music Hall. First-time writer/director Ryan Jenkins and producer Spencer Sherry (The Monkey) host an in-depth exploration of the project's journey from script to screen - starting from the first time they saw world-renowned illusionist Eric Mead perform on television, to organizing a never-before-attempted live production, all the way to a finished film. Join us for a singular event uniquely designed to give our Capital Region community an exclusive peek behind the curtain of a magical little film that couldn't have been made without them.
Anomaly
Written and Directed by Ryan Jenkins
Produced by Spencer Sherry
Starring: Eric Mead & John Romeo
Film Synopsis: A renowned magician features an inexplicable illusion in his final run of performances. Meanwhile, a government agent who witnesses the baffling act becomes hell-bent on uncovering its method.
When world-renowned magician Eric Mead responded to an email from a couple of 518 filmmakers, it seemed too good to be true. The surrealism only amplified when he offered to actually play the part of the magician in their latest short film script. Almost a year later, he was acting for the first time opposite long-time local thespian John Romeo, as local Emmy-winning production team APB rolled the camera. The film was shot over three days at the historic Cohoes Music Hall, and featured a live show on the final night that provided its audience an inside look at filmmaking, performances by illusionists, and an opportunity to be featured in the finished film. Now, over a year later, the project is complete and just had its World Premiere at the 2024 Coney Island Film Festival.
ABout The Team…
Ryan “Ron” Jenkins is a screenwriter based in Ballston Spa, who mainly finds time to write in the wintertime when his exterior construction and stone masonry business closes for the season. His stories are unique and often poignant; exploring complex themes and characters within visually-rich backdrops. “Anomaly” marks his first produced screenplay, as well as his directorial debut.
Spencer Sherry: Originally from Laurens, NY, Spencer found himself putting roots down in the Capital Region of New York starting in 2012 with a one-year long stint at The College of Saint Rose. After trying out a few other schools, he decided to trade in higher education to pursue film after being given an opportunity to work as a production assistant in NYC. After working on big-budget productions for a year, he moved back upstate - seeking out a community that better supported his ambitions. Thanks to a relentlessly encouraging environment, in 2023 he became the first person to adapt Stephen King’s short story “The Monkey” into a film. He now serves as the president of The 518 Film Network and, as such, his interests lie mainly in producing and helping the local film scene thrive, but he suspects it’s only a matter of time before the writing/directing bug comes back. He currently works at Saratoga Arts as their Community Outreach and Grants Coordinator, lives just outside Saratoga Springs with his partner Lauren, and spends his free time designing immersive events, building patios, and making hot sauce.
